As kids, the animal we probably fear the most is the lion. Regarded as the king of the jungle, it is tough, strong, and wild. It is very impossible that kids will be able to hold a real lion. This is why having a stuffed lion is a wonderful experience parents can offer their kids. A stuffed lion toy will help alleviate the child’s fear and, thus, make him or her interested to learn more about the largest member of the cat family.
Lions thrive in the regions in Southern Africa and sub-Saharan east. Most zoos have them, where they become the main attraction. Coming from the Felidae family, lions are unfortunately decreasing in number due to uncontrolled hunting and loss of habitat. Some agencies have taken it upon them to promote awareness regarding this to save and preserve the species.
Lions are very muscular and have very strong upper bodies. In spite of this, they still move graciously just like all members of the cat family. Their forepaws are also very strong that they can easily break a zebra’s back. The bones in their front legs are arranged in a way that it is easy for them to move in a twisting motion. The extra joints in their toes provide additional flexibility as well.
Having soft pads give them the advantage to move quietly, making it hard for their prey to hear them. They have sharp claws that grow in layers and up to 1 ½ in. long. Should one layer of their claw wear off, a new one will take its place which is much sharper. During playtime, they can retract these claws to avoid injuring themselves. The most common color of lions is sandy brown, and very rarely do we see dark brown lions. Much rarer is the white lion that can only be seen in the Timbavati region of South Africa.
The length of their mane varies from each one. Some have long manes that reach up to the front of their back legs. Others only have them up to their shoulders. Also, there are lions that have no mane at all. As lions grow older, the color of their mane becomes darker. This consists of stiff hair which provides them protection when fighting. Just like with other species of animals, female lions are attracted to males that have thick, long, and darker manes.
Lions have a very keen sense of sight that allows them to hunt even at dark. Their round pupils do not glow at night, but instead have a coating that makes light reflect on them. This gives them better sight even on low light. Their eye movement is limited so they have to turn their head to see a wider field.
A group of lions is called a pride. This normally consists of 15 to 40 lions with more female members than males. Once a cub is old enough, it can wander away from the pride and start another one. Other trivia you may be interested to know are that lions uses their tails to achieve balance, and that they produce an intimidating roar that seems to remind other animals that they are the king.
If you want your child’s experience with a stuffed lion to be fulfilling, choose a design that is very realistic. Known brands have made it a point to copy important details in their versions of the stuffed lion. Kids would love playing and wrestling with it. Even for just a few minutes they can proudly say that they have defeated the king of the jungle.
